Boat Race Derby

The Girl Scout Finale this year was a

Rain Gutter Derby.  Serena was assigned to

make a boat with 'her guy'.  They

decided to make the boat out of

Ivory soap.  They carved and scooped,

molded and tested the new boat.  It

float just fine but then they had to

think of a way to make it move.

They tried to make a sail. 

They tested it in the sink but the

sail weighed it down.  The made it

smaller but it still tipped over.

So . . . a boat without a sail it

shall be!

The night of the final event was the boat race.  Serena's troop leader, Kellie, set up a track for the boat race.  It was really a rain gutter filled with water.  The boats were powered on by hot air - blowing through a straw.  The girls were timed going across the track and through the finish line.  Serena and Bill finished the race in about 30 second - much longer than the winner 6 seconds!
